A simple google search will show that there are plenty of these specialised sports undergarments for sale, and at a bewildering array of prices. So, apart from keeping us warm when it’s still to cold to only wear a jersey, what are they good for? Why do all the manufacturers seem to think that we can’t do without them?

Firstly, there are two main types of baselayer – the compression variety and the less tightly fitting sort. There are also baselayers made of Merino wool (which cannot be of the compression variety) and those made from man-made materials. Both have their plusses and their minuses. Confused? Here are a few pointers that should help;

  • Man-made fibres will wick moisture away from the body better than Merino wool (being a natural fibre it absorbs sweat whereas man-made fibres should allow it to move away from the body)
  • Compression baselayers will not only regulate your temperature but also compress the muscles and reduce the build-up of lactic acid before during and after exercise.
  • Merino wool feels great against your skin and has natural anti-body odour qualities – man-made fibres don’t!
  • Cheap man-made ‘baselayers’ might keep you warmer but they are rarely have technical wicking qualities or compression.

If you’re looking for both compression and thermal protection from the still chilly early morning air, then you’ll be best suited with a man-made compression baselayer. It just so happens that Tenn make the Men’s and Women’s Sublimated Compression Baselayers and, being Tenn, they are available are a brilliant price that won’t break the bank.

Squeeze out a little more from your ride – and your purse!

Size charts & buying guide

Below are the Tenn sizing charts, and some information about measuring, and technical properties which we hope will be helpful. If there is anything you need a hand with, that we have not included here, please Contact Us and we are always happy to help!

Measuring

As a general rule, keep the measuring tape firm, but not too tight. If you're measuring yourself, try to take them more than once, to average out any change in your posture.

Measuring your chest:

Simply measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level under your arms and across your back.

Measuring your waist:

Just measure around the narrowest part of your body at your hips.

Measuring for gloves:

Wrap a tape measure around your strongest hand just below the knuckles and fingers, make a loose fist. Please round up to the nearest size and (not down).
